The Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2010 scholarships.

New Appraiser category

Marco Balzano, Phoenix, AZ

Marco BalzonoI am honored to be recognized by the Foundation.  My interest started a little over a year ago when I was in between careers and I was approached by Tom Helms and Ron Freeman of A-Z appraisal and Estate Consultants in Phoenix Arizona about a career in the personal property appraisal field.  Little did I know that the personal property appraisal field would be an interesting and rewarding career with a lot of exciting daily challenges.  As the next-generation of appraisers, I understand the importance of attending and completing the ISA Core Course as well as other key workshops and educational opportunities.  By receiving the scholarship from The Foundation for Appraisal Studies this will help me advance my education in the personal property field. I would like to thank the Foundation for Appraisal Studies for allowing me pursue my dreams.

Experienced Appraiser category

Susan Lahey, Toronto, Canada

Susan LaheyCurrently I am working as an independent consultant and appraiser for both individuals and institutions in the area of Asian art, specifically Chinese decorative arts.  Having completed a post-graduate diploma in Asian art through Sotheby's/School of Oriental and African Art in London, England, and previously worked at an auction house in Toronto, Canada for six years, I am also familiar with Japanese, Korean, Indian and African art.  While my experience and skills are in high demand, my purpose in taking the Core Course in Appraisal Studies offered by the ISA is to gain the formal, most up-to-date knowledge required to work effectively and to a professional/government recognized standard.  I appreciate very much receiving this scholarship which will assist me in building a fulfilling career in the appraisal industry in the area which personally inspires me.

Keith Ball Memorial Scholarship

Donna Bradshaw, Woodland, CA

Donna BradshawI live in Woodland, California with my husband and two children.  For the past 11 years I have worked at West Auctions, a business started by my father 46 years ago.  While growing up I was always required to help out with the family business, so as soon as I was old enough I set my sights on a career that had nothing to do with auctions or appraising. I graduated from college and worked as a paralegal at a law firm and later as an administrator at the University of California. It was at this point that I wound up facing the same dilemma that many women are faced with – should I focus on my career or my family? Thankfully, I did not have to choose one over the other.  I started working with West Auctions again, bringing my infant daughter with me to the office and working from home when I could. Not only did this arrangement work out well for my young family, but I realized that I truly enjoyed the work that I was doing. In 2002, I took the next step and became a professional personal property appraiser.  I am now delighted and very thankful to have received the Keith Ball Memorial Scholarship to further my career as an appraiser in the field of business valuations.
